What is Blue Yonder Space Planning Web?

Blue Yonder Space Planning Web (often associated with Open Access or the Luminate Portal) is the browser-based, SaaS evolution of the classic Space Planning tool, designed to allow field teams, suppliers, and casual users to view, edit, and collaborate on planograms from any device without requiring a heavy desktop installation.

For decades, Space Planning was a "Power User" tool that lived on a high-end laptop. If a Store Manager wanted to see a planogram, they had to wait for a PDF. Space Planning Web changes this paradigm. It moves the core functionality to the cloud. It allows a user to log in via a web browser (Chrome, Edge), open a live planogram directly from the Category Knowledge Base, make authorized "light edits" (like swapping a discontinued product for a new one), and save it back to the server instantly.

Why It Matters: Planogramming for the Masses

Desktop software creates bottlenecks; Web software creates flow. Space Planning Web democratizes the shelf.

  • Field Accessibility: A District Manager walking a store can pull up the real planogram on an iPad to verify compliance, rather than digging through old emails for a PDF.
  • Supplier Collaboration: Retailers can grant secure web access to their vendors (e.g., "Coca-Cola Category Captains"), allowing them to draw their own sections of the aisle online. This offloads work from the retailer while keeping the data central.
  • Reduced IT Burden: There is no software to install or patch. When Blue Yonder releases a new feature, every user gets it instantly upon their next login.

Key Capabilities

  1. Live Planogram Viewing: Users can visualize the shelf in 2D or 3D. They can click on products to see metadata (Price, Dimensions, Days of Supply) just like in the desktop tool.
  2. Light Editing: While it isn't designed for complex architectural changes, it allows for "maintenance" tasks. Users can add/remove products, adjust facings, and move shelves within pre-defined guardrails.
  3. Real-Time Reporting: It runs analytics in the browser. A user can highlight the planogram by "Sales" or "Profit" to see a heatmap, enabling instant decision-making during store visits.
  4. Planogram Compare: It allows users to visually compare the "Current" version vs. the "Proposed" version side-by-side, making it easy to approve new resets.

The Blue Yonder Difference

Blue Yonder differentiates this tool through Hybrid Synergy. They do not force a "Web Only" approach. They recognize that "Power Users" (the ones building complex automation scripts) still need the horsepower of the Desktop edition, while "Field Users" need the agility of the Web edition. Blue Yonder allows both to work on the same data simultaneously. A Power User can build the master template on Desktop, and five minutes later, a Field User can open that template on the Web to localize it for their specific store.
