What is Inventory Availability?
Inventory availability is the real-time answer to "how much of this item can I sell right now, and from where?"—a calculated number that takes total on-hand stock across the network and subtracts reservations, in-flight orders and safety buffers to give every channel an accurate view of sellable supply.
Why It Matters: On-Hand is Not the Same as Available
For enterprise retailers, a warehouse might hold 100 units, but 30 could be reserved for pending orders, 20 held for a promotion and 10 quarantined for QA. Selling all 100 is a promise you can't keep. Blue Yonder calculates true availability continuously, with ML right-sizing safety stock at the SKU and node level, so what every channel sees is what the network can actually ship—no overselling, no phantom stock.
3 Layers of the Availability Calculation
The capability spans the full range of sellable supply:
- On-hand aggregation: Live stock signals from every node—stores, DCs, in-transit and drop-ship—are ingested continuously.
- Reservation logic and dynamic safety stock: Committed orders and channel-specific holds are subtracted in real time, and ML-driven dynamic safety stock adjusts buffers continuously based on demand volatility and lead-time variability—so retailers hold less stock while protecting service level.
- Inventory segmentation and fencing: Different channels, accounts and geographies can see different slices of availability, so retailers can protect stock for wholesale, marketplace or key accounts without hiding it from everyone.
